“Babylon is fallen, is fallen that great city, because she has made the nations drink the wine of the wrath of her fornication”. Revelation 14: 8.

The winter edition of Trumpet Sounds, number 134, anticipates two catastrophic events which will take place in this coming decade. One will be a global war, the other the fall of Babylon. That edition of Trumpet Sounds was written in January. At the time there was no hint of the mayhem in the global economy which would follow within a couple of months. The winter edition went on to explain a prophecy, found in the book of Daniel, which points to this decade, the 2020’s, being significant for the fulfilment of end time events.

Right on cue, within a few weeks of writing, Babylon, the kingdom of this world was engulfed in a major crisis. In response to a virus, nation after nation has shut down its economy. Governments in taking this action live in the hope that after the crisis their national economies will bounce back, debts will be minimised and tax revenues recover quickly.

“And do this knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed.” Romans 13: 11

At the start of the new year and a new decade there is one thing of which we can be certain, the return of our Lord is closer now than when we first believed. Although at times it can seem far off, the Second Coming of Jesus Christ is a certainty. It is the blessed hope in which we can at all times and in every situation rejoice.

People lacking hope

Jesus said that the time would come when men’s hearts will fail them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth. The autumn issue of Trumpet Sounds commented on the despair of the climate change protestors. Their fears of what is coming on the earth is leading to a ‘tsunami’ of eco anxiety among young people. This is the beginning of the hearts failing with fear which will increase as this decade progresses.

Trumpet Sounds is part of the Together for the Nation, coalition of ministries. Faced with growing anxiety the coalition has produced a short video which points people to the source of hope. Please watch the video at this link: https://youtu.be/5JYgSNvaul0. We encourage you to share this video with friends and others, assuring them that there is hope in these troubled times.

Newsletter 130 Winter 2019

As I write this edition of Trumpet sounds, Leonie and I have just returned from 10 days in Jerusalem. We were there to visit our daughter who teaches at the Anglican (CMJ) International School in Jerusalem.

Jerusalem today is much like it must have been when our Lord lived and went up to it for the festivals. The present city has been entirely rebuilt several times since Jesus was on earth and it is further to the north. But as in His day it is full of merchants, traders, visitors, soldiers and the very religious. How many were aware back then that the pivotal event of all human history was taking place in their midst?

There would have been much gossip about a man who the leaders of the nation had sentenced to death. Who was he? Some claimed he was a prophet or even the Messiah. Then there were reports of strange occurrences with this man’s disciples. For most people life went on and continued to go on as if nothing significant had happened.

I do not know the day or hour of Jesus’ return. I do know within a few hundred yards the place to which He will come. In Jerusalem it is possible to look across to the Mount of Olives and reflect that soon, very soon, the next great pivotal event of all history will occur. Jesus Christ will return and place his feet on that mountain which will be split by an earthquake. He will come with His angels and the armies of heaven to rescue His chosen people. From that day on, the whole earth will be ruled by our Saviour. The seat of government for all the world will be Jerusalem.

Even in January Jerusalem is overflowing with visitors. The traders are hard at work seeking to lure you into their shops. The army is ever present, vigilant in case of trouble. The Western Wall is thronged with worshippers on Shabbat. There is bustle and activity. How many are aware that world events are pointing to the Second Coming of Jesus Christ? The restoration of Israel is in itself powerful evidence that the promised summer of our Lord’s reign is drawing near.

From the time that I took over Trumpet Sounds from my father, I have felt that the word which defines the purpose of the newsletter is ‘Watch’. This word summarises Jesus’ teaching on the events leading up to his return. To watch is to be ready. My first booklet which had the title ‘Watch’, is a reflection on what it means to ‘Watch’. I believe that the Lord has used it with several thousand copies circulated. It is still available from Trumpet Sounds.

The world goes about its business. The return of Christ will take it by surprise. “But you are not in darkness so that this day should over take you like a thief.”  Thessalonians 5: 4. That day will not overtake us like a thief if we are watching and ready. The world and even much of the church is unaware of the momentous times in which we live, but those who ‘watch’ recognise the signs.

Jesus said, “Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” Matthew 24: 44. That statement tells me not to be dogmatic about the timing of His return. At what point in time Jesus comes is for the Father alone to decide. We are to prepare for a time of persecution and suffering while always living in the blessed hope of His appearing. Keep watching, keep serving so that when He returns we may be counted among the good and faithful servants.

“Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear. For our God is a consuming fire.” Hebrews 12: 28 – 29.

Later in this issue of Trumpet Sounds I report on the response to my request to hear from readers about their experience of church, either being in or out of a church. I also make a few comments on my own church survey. Before that I have included with this edition of Trumpet Sounds the following two supplements:

Georgi Vins

The first supplement is a powerful and moving testimony taken from Georgi Vins book ‘The Gospel in Bonds’. Georgi spent many years in Soviet prisons because he would not renounce his faith in Christ. The testimony is a reminder that especially in the darkest hours our Lord will be right beside us and use it for His purposes. To read the click here Supplement

Wartime Miracles

When I first heard of this leaflet I didn’t think much about it. I thought that most Christians knew these things. It now seems that many do not. We need to be reminded of God’s mercy to this nation in the past so that in these critical days we turn to God and seek once again His mercy.

The author Rev. John Willans prays that this leaflet will be used by the Lord to stir us all up to intercede more urgently for our nation. We are facing tumultuous times. But in tumultuous times past the Lord has heard the prayers of our nation and been merciful to us. To read the leaflet click here Wartime Miracles Leaflet

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and love and of a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1: 7

Two weapons that Satan uses against the Christian are first deception and then fear. It was through deception that Satan first caused mankind to sin. He used a slight twisting of the truth to gain Eve’s attention. This was followed by a denial that God really meant what He had said. Finally the fruit of disobedience was made to look so attractive.

The twisting of the truth is rampant in the church. The epidemic is so widespread that for many it is difficult to find a sound fellowship. It is more important than ever that Christians have their faith firmly anchored in the teaching of the Bible. Jesus warned that a primary characteristic of the end of the age would be the attempt to deceive if possible even the elect. The deception of the elect is possible if they fail to obey Jesus’ command to watch.

A Free or Fear society

The Soviet dissident Natan Sharansky wrote in his book, “The Case for Democracy,” it is precisely “The Town Square Test” that determines whether or not a society can be considered free: “If a person cannot walk into the middle of the town square and express his or her views without fear of arrest, imprisonment, or physical harm, then that person is living in a fear society, not a free society.”

Sharansky was writing about legitimate points of view which may be contrary to main stream opinion. For the Christian these might be on views on marriage, gender identity and creation. Holding these views may make others feel uncomfortable but in no way do we wish them harm.

Ours is increasingly becoming a fear society. Holding any view other than those of liberal secular orthodoxy is now considered extreme and to be punished. It is Satan’s aim to cause those which he has not deceived to shrink in fear. But as Paul wrote to Timothy a spirit of fear does not come from God. When we abide in Christ, He gives us three things, power, love and a sound mind. Power brings the inner strength to stand firm when Satan tries to intimidate us. Love enables us to see those who persecute us as lost and in need of a Saviour. A sound mind recognises deception and warns against it.

Flee the wrath to come.

“What comes after death? Is it oblivion or conscious existence? Jesus Christ taught that after death comes judgment. He will be the judge consigning mankind to one of two destinies. Either we will enter eternal life and live with Him for ever or be thrown into the lake of fire suffering torment and destruction.”

“…… to suffer the wrath of God and be thrown into the lake of fire is ‘a horrific but preventable, tragedy’.”

“It is a tragedy which will affect not just a few but all who are living and have ever lived. Rarely is the alarm sounded. Frequently the wrong advice is being given.”

“God does not want any to suffer the tragedy of the lake of fire. In mercy He has provided a way of escape. But be warned, if we do not take that way of escape we will suffer the consequences.”

The above comes from the cover of a new booklet which I have prepared. ‘Flee from the wrath to come’ is a warning that after death comes judgment. This warning is rarely heard in churches and almost never outside church.

This booklet is a development of an article I wrote for Trumpet Sounds 124. In that article I posed the question, “facing such turbulent times what message would the head of the church, Jesus Christ, have us bring to the world?” John the Baptist was sent to prepare the way for Jesus. He preached a message of repentance and to flee the wrath to come.

Jesus will soon return. To prepare the way I believe that we need to follow the example of John the Baptist and warn of coming wrath.

I wrote the booklet ‘Watch’ for Christians. It is an encouragement to stand firm whatever may befall us before that day when Jesus gathers us up to be with Him. ‘Wrath’ is written for non-Christians, although it is a message which many in the church need to hear. The Lord has blessed ‘Watch’ by enabling the distribution of thousands of copies. To distribute booklets to Christians is one thing. To get the message into the hands of unbelievers is quite another matter. I trust that writing ‘Wrath’ is a beginning. Please pray the Lord will guide the next step which is how to make the message known.

If you would like to receive a copy of ‘Flee the Wrath to come’, please send me an email with your name and address.

“A third of mankind was killed by these three plagues, by the fire and the smoke and the brimstone, which proceeded out of their mouths”. Revelation 9:18

At the start of this year I commented that many sense that 2017 will be a very significant year.

One event this year, which will have great significance for the future, is the detonation of a hydrogen bomb by North Korea. The importance of this event has been largely missed by the media. That is because North Korea is looked at in isolation. There has been a failure to recognise the strength of the military cooperation it has with Iran.

North Korea has possessed Atomic bombs for years. A hydrogen bomb elevates it to join the select group of five other nations which have the technology. One expert likened the destructive power of the hydrogen bomb to an atom bomb as the difference between a tank shell and a bullet.

Coupled to this, it is believed that North Korea has miniaturised its nuclear warheads so that it can now fit multiple war heads to its missiles. Its missile technology has leapt forward in the last two years. From the recent test firings it is believed that North Korea now has intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of reaching most of Europe and the United States. In 2017 the prospect of a nuclear war has moved from the inconceivable to the almost inevitable.

Will this become the hugely destructive war, prophesied in Revelation chapter 9? A war which decimates one third of the world’s population. That war is foreseen as the prelude to the world accepting the Antichrist as its leader.

How did all this happen?

“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world the love of the Father is not in him.” 1 John 2: 15

I often ponder the words in 2 Thessalonians 2: 11 “God will send them strong delusion.” In teaching prophecy it is necessary to emphasise over and over the sovereignty of God in all that happens. The words ‘God will’ are frequently repeated in the Bible. As our knowledge of scripture broadens we come to understand that God will use Satan, his arch enemy, to fulfil his purposes.

The AV and NKJV versions of the Bible both translate the phrase in the above quote from Thessalonians as ‘strong delusion’. When reading the words we probably unconsciously insert the word ‘a’ before strong. This would make the delusion a particular reference to the acceptance of the ‘man of sin’, who is described earlier in the chapter. Mankind in its delusion will accept this false Christ as the saviour of the world. God will send this delusion and use it to separate those who believe the truth from those who accept Satan’s lie.

Leaving the ‘a’ out allows the delusion to have a much broader application. Towards the end of the age Mankind will suffer from a number of delusions leading up to the final delusion which accepts the Antichrist. These delusions lead people further and further away from the truth. Without the foundation of divinely inspired truth the ground is being prepared to receive the ultimate lie.

Three of the most powerful delusions at work in Britain today are, Evolution, gender confusion and Islam. Each in its own way undermines the truth of God as revealed in scripture.

Evolution denies the Creator. Evolution is the foundation of our secular society. By removing accountability to God man can take control his own destiny. Over the last 60 years laws based on the word of God have been repealed. They have been replaced with laws based on man’s faulty wisdom. The consequent break down of society is evidence of this futility for all to see, if only they would open their eyes.

Gender confusion has grown out of a belief in Evolution. As products of chance rather than a divine creation we can make our own choices. The ludicrous consequences of this delusion are illustrated in a following article.

Islam pretends to offer salvation without the need for an atonement. It denies the death of Christ for our sins. Islam sets out a number of religious rituals and rules for the faithful to follow. But even Islam admits that keeping of these does not guarantee a place in heaven. A Muslims deeds will be weighed in the balance on the Day of Judgment. However according to the Bible our good deeds can never pay the price for our sin. Only Jesus taking the penalty on Himself is sufficient to satisfy divine justice.

How do we counter these delusions? We need to return to a robust gospel which boldly declares our accountability to God. Many will mock but some will listen. The next article looks at the gospel as it was once preached.

Newsletter 122 Winter 2017

Welcome to the first edition of Trumpet Sounds in 2017. There are many who sense that this will be a significant year. Will they be proved right?

In this year there are a number of major anniversaries.

It is 120 years since the first Zionist Conference which paved the way for the Jewish state. Then 100 years ago the Balfour Declaration opened up the possibility of a Jewish state. UN Resolution 181 which set out the intent to establish a Jewish State was passed 70 years ago and it is 50 years since Jerusalem was restored to Jewish sovereignty.

It is also the anniversary of a number of other events which have shaped the end time world:

In 1917 the United States entered World War 1 ending a policy of isolationism. Following this the US took over the mantle of global policeman from Great Britain. That year Britain took Jerusalem from the Ottoman’s making possible a Jewish home land. Also in October 1917, revolution in Russia spread Marxism around the world.

In the UK it will be the anniversary of two Acts of Parliament which have profoundly affected the nation. It is 50 years since the passing of the Sexual Offences Act which decriminalising homosexual acts and 50 years since the Abortion Act 1967 which legalised abortions.

Finally this year is the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther nailing his 95 theses to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg. This event is often taken as the start date for the Protestant Reformation.

Without the Reformation there would have been no great surge in the missionary movements that took the gospel to the world. Also without the Reformation there would not have been a Christian Zionist movement in Britain. The support of Christians was crucial in enabling the dreamed of establishment of the Jewish state to get off the ground.

The Reformation led directly to the fulfilment of two essential end time prophecies; the preaching of the gospel of the kingdom in all the world as a witness to all the nations and the return of the Jews to Israel.

Because of these anniversaries many believe that 2017 will prove to be a significant year. How significant and in what way we will have to wait and see.

“….who exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped the creature, rather than the creator.”

As we draw near to the end of this age we are to expect a flood of evil. Man will prefer to listen to human wisdom, which is in reality guided by Satan, than to the wisdom of God. If we understand that the Bible says what it means and means what it says there is no doubt about the character of the present age from beginning to end. There will be wars and rumours of wars …. famines, pestilence and earthquakes. The gospel will be preached to the world in troubled times.

It is not for the church to build the kingdom of God on earth. That will come when Jesus Christ returns. We are called to be faithful witnesses despite the opposition of the world. Troubled times and tribulation are our expectation.

In the past Trumpet Sounds has described Christian activity in the political realm as fighting a rear guard action to hold on to what ground we can. It is the holding back of the flood of evil while accepting that many battles will be lost. But it is possible that some battles will be won and some victories gained. Therefore it was a great encouragement to hear that the Supreme Court has ruled the Scottish ‘Named Person’ Scheme as unlawful.  Opposition to the scheme was led by the Christian Institute.

Under the scheme, all children in Scotland would have been allocated a ‘Named Person’, such as a teacher or health worker, to act as a state-appointed guardian. The nominated individual would have been given access to the child’s confidential records and be expected to report any concerns to the police.

The Court stated that the data sharing provisions of the Children and Young People (Scotland) Act breach the right to a private and family life under article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). The Act would have allowed sensitive information about the family to be widely shared without the parent’s or the child’s knowledge. Especially vulnerable to the provisions of the Act would be those who did not share the State’s view of the world.

The Scottish government will have to amend the Act to ensure that families do not suffer from unwarranted invasion of their privacy by the State. Pray that instead of amendment the scheme is scrapped.
